America’s Stunning National Park Overwhelmed by Disneyland-Size Crowds

Yosemite National Park has witnessed a dramatic increase in visitor numbers this spring, highlighting the challenges of managing crowd levels. In March 2023, the park recorded 225,817 visitors, a significant rise from 155,758 in March 2022. This uptick marks the busiest month since 2016.
Changes to Reservation Policies
Earlier this year, the National Park Service (NPS) modified its reservation policy. The NPS eliminated advance reservations, which were a requirement even during peak travel seasons. This decision aimed to enhance accessibility for visitors and accommodate expected high visitation in 2026.
Visitor Experience
The influx of tourists has led to concerns about overcrowding, especially as the busy summer season approaches. Many visitors have reported full parking lots, crowded shuttle buses, and long wait times. For instance, local resident Kunal Khandwala described the shuttle service waits as “insane,” while others noted the difficulty in finding parking spots.
Traffic Management Solutions
In response to the overwhelming crowds, the NPS intends to implement real-time traffic management. This includes temporary diversions and increased seasonal staff to help manage high-traffic areas during peak visitation days.
- Key challenges faced by visitors:
- Crowded parking lots
- Overcapacity shuttle buses
- Long wait times
Public Feedback
Experts, including John Buckley of the Central Sierra Environmental Resource Center, pointed out that during peak weekends, the park often exceeds capacity, resulting in inappropriate parking and a less enjoyable visitor experience.
Looking Ahead
As summer approaches, the NPS urges visitors to plan their trips accordingly. Reports indicate that weekends, especially between Memorial Day and Labor Day, are projected to be extremely crowded.
- Visitor recommendations:
- Avoid visiting during peak season
- Consider visiting on weekdays or early in the day
The changes in visitation patterns and reservation policies at Yosemite National Park reflect broader trends in national park management as officials seek to balance accessibility with visitor experience. Yosemite remains one of America’s most iconic destinations, and maintaining its natural beauty while managing visitor flow remains a top priority.
