Christine Fréchette, the Premier of Quebec, has declared her commitment to reducing living costs as her top priority. This agenda comes even as she navigates financial challenges, having already begun to tap into the reserve budget previously set by Finance Minister Eric Girard. Fréchette emphasized her determination to assist Quebecers, stating that the government needs to do much more to support those in need.
Removal of TVQ: Planned Savings for Households
In a significant announcement, Fréchette is set to abolish the Quebec Sales Tax (TVQ) on a variety of grocery items and pharmacy products. This includes everyday goods such as granola bars, muffins, pre-cut fruits and vegetables, tissues, and toilet paper. This change is expected to yield annual savings of approximately $50 per household and will cost the government around $100 million each year.
Financial Outlook and Budgetary Challenges
Fréchette’s initiatives are already impacting the province’s budget. With the removal of the TVQ and other financial commitments she has made since assuming office in mid-April, the government is drawing on a budget reserve of $250 million established by Eric Girard. Fréchette has allocated funds from this reserve for various purposes, including:
- $140 million for reducing property transfer taxes for new buyers.
- $50 million for tax cuts for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
- $22 million for enhancing home care services.
Combined with the expected costs from the TVQ removal, the total expenditure has already exceeded $312 million. Fréchette has stated that these measures are aimed at providing relief to Quebecers facing difficult economic circumstances.
Finance Minister’s Warning
Eric Girard has expressed concern over the numerous financial announcements made by Fréchette’s administration. In a recent email, he urged her to be mindful of the state of public finances, emphasizing the importance of responsible spending. Nonetheless, Fréchette believes that it is crucial to balance fiscal management with the pressing needs of the population.
Preparation for Upcoming Elections
At a recent CAQ party council meeting, Fréchette’s closing speech highlighted her preparation for the upcoming election campaign. She criticized other parties for proposing outdated solutions and reaffirmed her government’s focus on modern issues. The support she received during her address suggests a bolstered confidence as the campaign approaches.
