Frechette Exceeds Budget on Products; Girard Expresses Concern

The upcoming abolition of the Quebec Sales Tax (TVQ) on certain grocery and pharmacy products has raised concerns regarding the provincial budget. Premier Christine Fréchette is moving ahead with this initiative, which aims to bring financial relief to families across Quebec.

Details of the TVQ Abolition Announcement

Premier Christine Fréchette is set to announce on Monday that the TVQ will be eliminated on specific items, including granola bars and toilet paper. This decision aligns with a promise she made during her candidacy for the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) leadership.

  • Economic Impact: The measure could save an average of $50 per household annually.
  • Financial Implications: Expected to cost the government $100 million each year.

Concerns from Finance Minister Girard

Finance Minister Eric Girard has expressed unease over the rapid series of announcements made by Fréchette since her election in mid-April. He highlighted the risks of exceeding the $250 million budgetary reserve allocated for future commitments by her predecessor, François Legault.

Fréchette has already utilized a significant portion of this reserve for other financial commitments, including:

  • $140 million for substantial refunds on property transfer taxes.
  • $50 million for reducing small business taxes.
  • $40 million to reimburse carbon taxes to farmers.

The cumulative total of these actions now stands at approximately $330 million.

Girard’s Warning

In a recent email sent on May 2, Girard cautioned Fréchette about the potential consequences of her announcements. He noted that Quebecers are financially aware and expect responsible management from their leaders. His comments underscore the importance of fiscal prudence amidst growing governmental financial commitments.

Upcoming Political Developments

On Saturday, Fréchette will participate in the last general council of her party before the election campaign begins in three months. She has also announced the appointment of Marie-Belle Gendron and Yannick Gagnon as co-chairs for the upcoming CAQ campaign.
