Ford Halts F-150 Production at Dearborn Truck Plant, Sources Report

Ford Motor Company is pausing production of its best-selling F-150 pickup at the Dearborn Truck Plant due to issues at a nearby stamping facility. This temporary shutdown commenced on May 21 and is expected to last for several days.
Details of the Production Halt
The halt in F-150 production results from the need to repair a broken hood die at the stamping plant. This critical part is essential for shaping metal components of the vehicle. Two sources familiar with the situation revealed that the assembly line would be inactive for at least three days, potentially until Sunday.
Ford has noted that the suspension of operations could lead to a loss of approximately 2,500 F-150 trucks. This setback is significant as the company is already facing a shortage of about 60,000 vehicles in comparison to last year’s inventory levels.
Impact on Inventory and Sales
- Production Rate: The Dearborn facility typically runs two shifts, producing around 1,000 trucks daily.
- Current Challenges: Ford has been working to recover from previous disruptions, particularly those affecting aluminum supplies due to incidents at their aluminum supplier, Novelis.
- Super Saturdays: The company has implemented additional shifts, termed “super Saturdays,” to accelerate production and compensate for lost output.
Ford dealers express concern over the potential impact of this production halt on truck sales, noting that inventory levels are already low. The company aims to maintain production levels and meet demand for the popular F-150.
Steps Toward Recovery
In light of these challenges, Ford announced plans to add 50,000 F-Series pickups to its inventory this year. This strategy involves several initiatives:
- Increasing production speed at the Kentucky Truck Plant.
- Hiring additional employees to support assembly efforts.
- Launching a third shift at the Dearborn Truck Plant to boost F-150 output.
- Introducing new production lines at the Oakville Assembly Complex in Canada.
Ford aims to forgo summer shutdowns across all F-Series truck assembly plants to further enhance production and recover from inventory losses.
As the aluminum supplier, Novelis, works to resume full operations, Ford’s leadership remains optimistic about stabilizing F-150 inventory. However, recovery may extend into the latter half of the year.
Ford’s ongoing commitment to improving production efficiency and addressing supply chain issues remains crucial in overcoming the current production hiccup.
