Andre Onana Eyes Return to Manchester United

Andre Onana is preparing to return to Manchester United for pre-season training, despite the club’s intentions to offload him this summer. He has not been a regular starter this season, losing his position to Altay Bayindir at the beginning. Belgium international Senne Lammens has since become the primary goalkeeper for United.

Upcoming Pre-Season Plans

Onana will finish his loan with Trabzonspor on Friday during the Turkish Cup final against Konyaspor. Manchester United will begin their pre-season training in mid-July, prior to their first friendly match against Wrexham in Helsinki on July 18.

World Cup Context

Notably, Onana is among a select group of senior players who won’t be participating in the World Cup. The expectation is that these players will form the core of the squad for the match against Wrexham, with many academy players also joining the lineup.

Goalkeeper Situation at Manchester United

Senne Lammens and Altay Bayindir are set to represent their countries at the World Cup. Veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton is close to signing a new one-year contract, adding to United’s goalkeeping depth. The future status of Radek Vitek, who had a successful loan spell with Bristol City, remains uncertain.

Onana’s Season Performance

This season, Onana’s participation with United has been minimal. His only appearance resulted in a disappointing exit from the EFL Cup against League Two’s Grimsby Town. Meanwhile, he has played 29 league matches for Trabzonspor, helping them achieve a third-place finish and secure European competition for the next season.

Possibility of Exclusion for Wrexham Match

The uncertainty surrounding Onana’s future raises questions about his inclusion in the squad for the Wrexham game. If his situation remains unresolved, he might face exclusion, similar to last summer when several players were separated from the main squad for training.

  • Onana finishes his loan with Trabzonspor Friday.
  • Manchester United’s pre-season begins mid-July.
  • Wrexham match scheduled for July 18 in Helsinki.

As Manchester United prepares for the upcoming season, the focus will remain on Onana’s potential transition and the reshaping of the club’s goalkeeping ranks.
