Canucks Dismiss Foote After One Season as Coach

Adam Foote has been dismissed as head coach of the Vancouver Canucks after only one season. This decision follows a significant restructuring within the team’s management.

Major Changes in the Canucks Organization

The Canucks recently promoted Ryan Johnson to general manager and appointed Henrik and Daniel Sedin as co-presidents. These leadership changes occurred after former general manager Patrik Allvin was let go last month and former president Jim Rutherford stepped down earlier in May.

Coaching Staff Changes

In addition to Foote’s departure, assistant coaches Kevin Dean, Scott Young, and Brett McLean have also been let go. This reshuffling comes on the heels of a disappointing season.

Foote’s Season Overview

  • Foote, who is 58 and hails from Toronto, joined the Canucks as an assistant coach in January 2023.
  • He took over as head coach after Rick Tocchet’s exit.
  • The Canucks under Foote finished the season with a dismal record of 25-49-8, marking the worst record in the league.
  • During the season, captain Quinn Hughes was traded to the Minnesota Wild.

Foote’s Coaching Background

Before his time with the Canucks, Foote spent six seasons with the Colorado Avalanche as an assistant coach until 2017. He then transitioned to junior hockey, leading the Kelowna Rockets in the Western Hockey League from 2018 to 2020.

Playing Career Highlights

Foote enjoyed a distinguished playing career, competing in 1,157 games over 19 seasons. He played for the Avalanche/Nordiques and the Columbus Blue Jackets. Drafted 22nd overall in 1989, he finished with 66 goals and 242 assists.

  • He won two Stanley Cups with the Avalanche in 1996 and 2001.
  • Foote also represented Canada internationally, winning gold at the 2002 Winter Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey.

Future Developments

With Foote’s exit, the Canucks will be looking for their 23rd head coach in franchise history. The team will also prepare for the upcoming NHL Draft, where they own the third overall pick. Currently, the Canucks join the Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers as teams seeking new head coaches.
