Rising Talent Gurnoor Brar Gains Attention from Cricket Legends Gill and Dhawan

Gurnoor Brar, a promising pacer from Punjab, is attracting attention from cricketing legends Shubman Gill and Shikhar Dhawan. His journey from casual cricket to a potential star is inspiring.
Early Years and Introduction to Cricket
Growing up in Kheo Wali, Punjab, Gurnoor initially enjoyed sports like football and tennis instead of cricket. He picked up a cricket ball at the age of 16 after a friend’s suggestion to try out for school trials due to his impressive height of six feet five inches. This advice led him to explore his talent in bowling.
Developing Talent and Making a Mark
Brar’s skills quickly caught the attention of Shubman Gill, then a player for the India Under-19 team. Their early friendship helped Brar secure a position on the district team and later play for the Punjab Under-23 side.
- 2021: Made List A debut for Punjab.
- 2022: Played five first-class matches, although his performances were modest.
Impressing in the IPL
Brar gained valuable experience as a net bowler for Punjab Kings, where he impressed then-captain Shikhar Dhawan. This led to an IPL debut against Lucknow Super Giants, which provided him with a reality check about the competitive nature of the league.
His first ball in the IPL faced a dropped catch, but he kept his spirits up. “Bowling a no-ball is a sin,” he emphasizes. The experience taught him about planning and execution, as the modern game demands consistent precision.
Overcoming Challenges and Learning Lessons
During the Sher-e-Punjab Trophy, an unfortunate injury resulted in a disc bulge that later turned into a fracture, sidelining him for the 2023-24 season. Despite this setback, he received encouragement from Shubman Gill to join the Gujarat Titans as a net bowler for IPL 2024.
Mentorship and Growth at Gujarat Titans
At Gujarat Titans, Brar found mentorship under Ashish Nehra, who shared insights from his own injury struggles. Nehra emphasized the importance of workload management and recovery. Brar noted, “Working hard is important, but you must listen to your body.”
After a year at Gujarat Titans, he was signed for Rs 30 lakh during the 2025 IPL auction and was retained for the 2026 season.
Current Status and Future Prospects
Brar has established himself as a regular performer for Punjab and is now part of the India A squads. With 12 wickets in three matches, he is gaining recognition among selectors, including BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar, who identified him as “one for the future.”
Brar embodies the hope of enhancing India’s pace-bowling arsenal, with strong performances poised to draw him into national contention.
