Robot Submarine Discovers Structures Under Antarctica, Then Mysteriously Vanishes

An unmanned submarine recently discovered intriguing structures beneath Antarctica’s Dotson Ice Shelf before mysteriously vanishing. The autonomous underwater vehicle, known as Ran, had embarked on a mission to map a vast area of ice, ultimately traveling approximately ten miles towards the ice structure’s center.

Ran’s Mission Under Dotson Ice Shelf

The exploration was directed by Anna Wåhlin, a prominent professor of oceanographic physics at the University of Gothenburg. Her research primarily investigates the effects of ocean currents on ice shelf erosion and the ramifications for global sea levels.

Details of Ran’s Expedition

During the 2022 campaign, Ran operated beneath the Dotson Ice Shelf for 27 days. Its mission aimed to uncover the mystery behind the differing melting rates on the eastern and western sides of the ice shelf. While the eastern side is thick and slow to melt, the western side is noticeably thinner and more vulnerable to melting.

Noteworthy Findings

  • Ran mapped 54 square miles of the underside of the ice, revealing:
    • Flat plateaus
    • Terraced steps
    • Teardrop-shaped pits
  • These features had remained undetected by satellite images until now.

The Role of Ocean Currents

Ran’s findings indicate that Circumpolar Deep Water, a warm, salty current, plays a critical role in melting the underside of the Dotson Ice Shelf. Observations show that this warm water influx primarily impacts the western region, enhancing erosion.

Effects of Melting Ice

Data suggests that the melting process on the Dotson Ice Shelf is leading to significant contributions to sea level rise, with estimates showing it added 0.02 inches between 1979 and 2017.

Challenges Faced by Ran

Ran operated without real-time communication due to the challenges posed by the thick ice. It relied on advanced navigation systems to accurately position itself while exploring underneath the ice.

Disappearance of Ran

After completing a successful mapping operation, Ran was sent on another mission to gather additional data beneath the ice. However, it vanished without a trace, and attempts to re-establish contact were unsuccessful. The possible reasons for its disappearance range from mechanical failure to collision with ice formations.

Future Implications for Sea Level Rise

Despite Ran’s disappearance, the information gathered during its missions has considerably enhanced understanding of ice and ocean interactions beneath the Dotson Ice Shelf. These insights are crucial for predicting how the ice will respond to climate change.

Research on Antarctic ice loss demonstrates a significant contribution to global sea levels, emphasizing the importance of ongoing exploration and study in this region. The results from Ran’s missions will undoubtedly inform future models that assess the impact of global warming on ice stability.
