Secret Service Uncovers 14 Skimming Devices in Houston Businesses

In a recent operation, the U.S. Secret Service uncovered multiple card skimming devices across Houston, specifically in Harris County. This initiative aimed to protect both businesses and consumers from fraud as the FIFA World Cup approaches.

Details of the Operation

During the two-day operation, agents and local law enforcement examined nearly 400 businesses. They inspected over 3,100 point-of-sale terminals, gas pumps, and ATMs. The effort led to the discovery of 14 skimming devices attached to card readers.

Impact of Skimming

According to estimates from the Secret Service, skimming fraud annually costs consumers approximately $1 billion. Authorities believe this operation has prevented around $14.5 million in potential theft.

Nationwide Initiative

This operation is part of a broader, nationwide effort by the Secret Service. Officials emphasize the importance of protecting international visitors during peak travel periods, particularly ahead of major events like the FIFA World Cup.

Acting Special Agent in Charge Thomas Rizza highlighted the operation’s significance. He mentioned, “Our collaboration with law enforcement partners is crucial in preventing fraud and safeguarding financial resources for the public.”

Educational Outreach and Safety Tips

In addition to apprehending the skimming devices, officials educated businesses on how to identify these threats. Here are key tips shared by the Secret Service:

  • Check card readers for anything loose, crooked, or damaged.
  • If something seems unusual, avoid using the reader.
  • Opt for “tap-to-pay” technology or use chip-enabled cards when possible.
  • When using your card at gas stations, choose credit over debit to bypass PIN entry.
  • Cover your PIN input to protect against potential pinhole cameras.
  • Use ATMs located indoors or in well-lit areas, reducing the likelihood of skimming.
  • Avoid using card readers in tourist areas, which are often targeted by scammers.

The successful uncovering of skimming devices in Houston underscores the ongoing risks faced by consumers and the importance of vigilance in safeguarding personal financial information.
