Benoit Tardif: The Patrick Roy of Illustration at Pizza Punk Aréna

Benoit Tardif, a notable illustrator and devoted hockey fan, recently launched his artistic project titled Pizza Punk Aréna. This work reflects his childhood experiences, highlighting key figures such as Patrick Roy and the music of Green Day. The book captures the essence of growing up in the 1990s, where hockey and punk culture collided.
Benoit Tardif: A Life Full of Hockey and Art
Tardif, who is now 42 years old, has successfully combined his passion for art and hockey throughout his life. He is a goalkeeper for the local hockey team, Les As, and recently celebrated their league championship victory. Tardif noted, “I designed a mask similar to Patrick Roy’s, but featuring our green and yellow logo.”
Superstitions and Personal Rituals
Despite not communicating with his equipment like Roy, Tardif embraces some superstitions. After switching back to his old grey helmet, he attributes his team’s invincibility to that decision. He humorously states, “I won’t take it off again.”
The Influence of Hockey and Punk Music
- Childhood Aspirations: Tardif desired to be a goalkeeper, seeing it as an artistic position in hockey.
- Artistic Development: He has been sketching goalies since his youth, paralleling his artistic evolution with significant hockey events.
- Musical Awakening: His introduction to punk music, sparked by Green Day’s Dookie, greatly shaped his artistic voice.
The Essence of Pizza Punk Aréna
Pizza Punk Aréna is not merely a collection of illustrations; it chronicles Tardif’s journey through the vibrant 1990s in Saint-Eustache. The book’s illustrations connect his passion for hockey with the rock and punk music scenes. His artistic style has garnered recognition over the past 15 years, establishing Tardif as a prominent figure in Quebec illustration.
Reflections and Inspirations
The COVID-19 pandemic prompted Tardif to reflect on his identity as an artist. He recalls, “During lockdown, I fell into a vortex of NOFX videos on YouTube and cried.” This introspection influenced the pages dedicated to his CD collection, evoking nostalgia for fellow forty-somethings who cherish skate punk music.
