Glasgow Celebrates Milestone with Continuous Scripture Reading This Weekend
Glasgow is set to celebrate a significant milestone this weekend with a continuous reading of holy scriptures at the Central Gurdwara. This event will span from Friday morning to Sunday evening, marking the Sikh temple’s 10th anniversary.
Celebration Details
The Central Gurdwara’s chair, Surjit Chowdhary MBE, expressed excitement about the anniversary occurring on May 16, with celebrations kicking off on May 15. The gurdwara invites the community and visitors to participate in the festivities.
Impact on the Community
Over the past decade, the gurdwara has played a crucial role in serving the Glasgow community. During the Covid-19 pandemic, it provided over half a million meals. These meals were distributed to frontline workers and various establishments across the city, including:
- Hospitals
- Police stations
- Fire brigades
- Hotels
- Homes
The gurdwara also reached out to international students, offering meals and temporary accommodations. Daily, between 80 to 100 students used the facility, where the community donated new quilts and pillows for their comfort.
Ongoing Community Services
Since the pandemic, the Central Gurdwara continues to expand its services. It hosts medical camps three times a year, providing free health checks to anyone in need. Its day centre welcomes individuals from diverse backgrounds, offering support, conversation, and guidance.
Daily Meal Service
The gurdwara’s kitchen remains active, serving free meals daily to all who enter its doors, reinforcing its commitment to community service.
