Authorities in Neamț, Romania, recently apprehended a 62-year-old British national wanted for drug trafficking. This individual faces life imprisonment after being charged with smuggling large quantities of cocaine into the United Kingdom.
Details of the Operation
The arrest took place on May 14, 2026, during a coordinated operation led by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations – Pursuits Service. The collaboration involved law enforcement from I.P.J. Neamț and I.P.J. Botoșani.
Background of the Criminal Charges
- The suspect is wanted under a warrant issued by Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London.
- He is accused of being part of an organized crime group responsible for attempting to introduce approximately 500 kilograms of cocaine into the UK in August 2024.
- The estimated street value of the drugs was around £13 million.
The organized crime network utilized an inflatable boat to retrieve cocaine left stranded offshore. Such offenses are classified under strict British laws, resulting in potential life sentences under the Customs and Excise Management Act and the Misuse of Drugs Act of 1977.
Extradition Process
Investigation efforts in Romania began in February 2026 and were led by a prosecutor from the Bucharest Court of Appeal. After the suspect’s capture in Roman, he was presented to prosecutors in Bacău, where authorities ordered his detention.
The fugitive is currently in the custody of Romanian police. Legal procedures are set to begin for executing the arrest warrant and extraditing him to the UK.
