Teacher Suspended for Misusing Sick Leave to Travel to Japan

An elementary school teacher in Saanich, located on Vancouver Island, has faced suspension due to professional misconduct. Alex Chen, who previously received disciplinary measures for “time theft,” has had his teaching license suspended for two weeks. This decision comes from British Columbia’s Teacher Regulation Branch.

Misuse of Sick Leave for Personal Travel

In March 2025, Chen improperly scheduled three paid sick days before spring break. According to the agreement, he was not actually ill but planned a trip to Japan during that time. This trip was classified as a “pleasure trip.”

Previous Disciplinary Actions

Chen admitted to professional misconduct in relation to past behavior. These incidents included making social media videos during school hours while identifying himself as a teacher. The school district found that he had filmed content on school property, which resulted in disciplinary action.

  • Chen used student artwork and gifts in his social media posts without explicit permission.
  • He diverted work time to create content for personal use, violating school policies.

Additionally, the investigation revealed that Chen had violated professional boundaries with a former student over a two-year period. His actions included:

  • Sending over 80 emails to the student.
  • Recommending sexually explicit music.
  • Attending sports events that the student participated in, without any coaching role.

Consequences and Future Restrictions

As a result of these violations, Chen’s employment with the school district was terminated in May 2025. Besides the two-week suspension of his teaching license, he has accepted additional conditions. Chen’s teaching certificate will remain restricted until he completes a professional boundaries training program.
