Santander to Close 13 Branches Next Week – Complete List

Santander UK will permanently close 13 branches next week as part of a larger strategy to adapt to changing customer preferences. This decision is part of a broader initiative that will see additional branches shut down in May.

Santander’s Branch Closures: Key Details

At the beginning of the year, Santander UK announced plans to close 44 of its branches nationwide. The first four closures took place in January, with the remaining 40 set to cease operations by the end of May.

Reasons for Closure

The decision to close branches is largely driven by a significant shift toward online banking. Santander reported that an overwhelming 96% of customer transactions are now conducted through digital platforms. This reflects a growing trend among banking customers opting for virtual services rather than in-person visits.

Impact on Employment

The closure of branches will impact jobs significantly. Santander has indicated that around 291 jobs are at risk due to the latest round of closures. Just under a year ago, in March 2025, the bank announced plans to close 95 branches, affecting approximately 750 employees.

  • 291 jobs at risk with current closures
  • 95 branches closed in March 2025
  • 750 employees impacted previously
  • 2,000 jobs lost during the previous year due to restructuring

Future Banking Solutions

In response to the closures, Santander has committed to providing alternatives for customers. The bank plans to introduce “community bankers” through its Santander Local stores and shared banking hubs. This initiative aims to ensure that customers still have access to essential in-person banking services in affected areas.

Closure Schedule

The upcoming closures will commence on April 28, 2026, with additional branches slated to shut down during the first three weeks of May. This ongoing strategy reflects Santander’s efforts to streamline operations while catering to the evolving needs of its customers.
