Ball Trial Expanded to WXV Global Rugby Series

World Rugby has confirmed the extension of its women-specific 4.5 size ball trial to the WXV Global Series in 2026. This initiative follows a successful initial phase during the HSBC SVNS Series this season. The new ball is designed in partnership with Gilbert, featuring custom dimensions while retaining the same weight and advanced aerodynamic characteristics as the standard size 5 ball.

Benefits of the New Ball

The development of the 4.5 size ball has been informed by player feedback, ensuring it meets the unique needs of women’s rugby. This initiative aims to enhance player welfare and performance at the elite level.

Official Comments

Mark Harrington, World Rugby’s Chief Player Welfare and Rugby Services Officer, expressed enthusiasm about the trial’s progress: “The feedback from players regarding the ball for women’s sevens has been overwhelmingly positive. We are eager to see how it performs in the elite 15-a-side format during the WXV Global Series.”

Upcoming Competitions

In addition to the ball trial, World Rugby has announced the WXV Global Series Challenger. This competition will take place at Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Sports Park in September 2026. It will feature six teams ranked 13 to 17 globally, competing across three weekends.

  • The WXV Global Series Challenger is funded by World Rugby.
  • It aims to provide unions with consistent high-quality international matches from 2026 to 2028.
  • This event will serve as the Final Qualification Tournament for the 2029 Women’s Rugby World Cup.

These developments highlight World Rugby’s commitment to advancing women’s rugby through targeted initiatives and support, paving the way for a more competitive and equitable playing environment.
