Controversial BTCC Driver Returns to Dominate Once More

The world of British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) is witnessing the return of a controversial driver, Jason Plato. After enduring a tumultuous period that included personal losses, Plato is making a comeback as a team owner, with high hopes of dominating the racing scene once more.

Jason Plato’s Tumultuous Past

Jason Plato faced significant challenges in his life, including the end of his marriage, the loss of his TV career as the presenter of Channel 5’s Fifth Gear, and financial setbacks. Perhaps most distressingly, he survived two suicide attempts. Fortunately, with the help of friends, including fellow racer Ross Brawn, he found the strength to rise from despair.

A New Beginning as Team Owner

Having shifted gears from racing driver to team principal, Plato is embarking on a new journey with his team, Plato Racing. The project gained momentum in October of last year and reflects his passion for motorsport. “But we’re late,” Plato acknowledged, emphasizing the team’s ambitious goals.

Building a Competitive Team

Plato has been proactive in assembling a team of experienced professionals, though he admits that they have not worked in a setup quite like this before. “We’ve kicked the others hard in the nuts because we’ve nicked all of their best staff,” he declared, indicating a fierce spirit of competition.

Racing Regulations and Challenges

  • RML, a crucial partner, has leased a unit to Plato Racing.
  • Under the unique New Generation Touring Car (NGTC) regulations, RML supplies all suspension parts for the BTCC grid.
  • RML is also constructing complete cars, a role it has returned to after years of experience with Vauxhall and Chevrolet.

CEO Paul Dickinson of RML is cautious, aware of the fine line the organization walks in this competitive environment. “Let’s be clear, the other teams are worried, as I would be if I was them,” he noted. This relationship is structured to prevent any unfair advantages, with RML only supplying parts while Plato Racing handles the racing operations.

Plato’s Transition to Team Principal

As Plato navigates his new responsibilities, he is acutely aware of the shift from being a self-centered driver to a thoughtful team leader. “If I do something wrong, I could hurt people here,” he stated, showcasing his commitment to his team’s success over personal ambition.

The upcoming season promises to be thrilling as Jason Plato strives to leave his mark in a new role. His journey from controversy to potential dominance in the BTCC is one that motorsport fans will be eagerly watching.
