Giants Progress in Talks with Dexter Lawrence Post Trade Request, GM Reports

General manager Joe Schoen confirmed that the New York Giants are engaged in discussions with Dexter Lawrence’s camp following the defensive tackle’s recent trade request. During a pre-draft news conference, Schoen mentioned productive conversations involving himself, head coach John Harbaugh, and senior VP of football operations Dawn Aponte.

High Hopes for Dexter Lawrence

Harbaugh expressed optimism about Lawrence’s future with the Giants, stating that they would like him to remain with the team. Schoen added, “At some point, we’ll come to a resolution, whatever that may be.” The discussions about Lawrence are ongoing, but Schoen refrained from specifying whether the upcoming NFL Draft on April 23 would influence any deadlines regarding negotiations.

Lawrence’s Contract Situation

  • Lawrence is currently under contract for two more years.
  • He is set to earn $19.5 million this year and $20 million in 2027.

The NFL Network later reported that the negotiations reached a stalemate, suggesting that the draft might be a crucial turning point for both parties involved. Despite Lawrence’s trade request, Schoen indicated that it has not disrupted the Giants’ preparation for the draft.

Potential Draft Implications

The New York Giants hold the fifth overall pick in the upcoming draft. They have various options available, including potential selections like:

  • Jeremiyah Love, running back from Notre Dame
  • Sonny Styles, linebacker from Ohio State
  • Caleb Downs, safety from Ohio State

Schoen also noted that Lawrence’s uncertain status may affect the team’s free agency strategies. Recently, the Giants hosted defensive lineman D.J. Reader, who played all 17 games for Detroit last season.

Future Considerations

Schoen remains open to evaluating offers for Lawrence, stating, “If teams call, you take into account it’s a case-by-case basis.” He emphasized the importance of considering each situation thoroughly, including the potential impact on the roster and overall team strategy.

The Giants continue to manage a critical off-season, balancing the immediate needs of the roster and long-term projections as they prepare for both the draft and potential offseason acquisitions.
