Claude Bégin Channels John Travolta in New Role for Grease Musical

Claude Bégin will play Danny Zuko in a new Quebec production of “Grease,” taking on a role famously portrayed by John Travolta. The musical is set to debut from December 11 to 17 at the Théâtre St-Denis in Montreal.

New Production Details

The upcoming rendition of “Grease” will also feature Claudia Bouvette and Éléonore Lagacé alternating in the roles of Sandy Dombrowski and Betty Rizzo. Joël Legendre will take on the parts of Johnny Casino and the Teen Angel, while Julie Ringuette will portray Miss Lynch, the English teacher.

Background on Claude Bégin

This will be Bégin’s first experience in a musical. Although his exposure to musical theater comes from his father, opera director Marc Bégin, he admits to being relatively unfamiliar with “Grease.” “I have never seen the show and have little connection to the film, except for vague memories,” he shared during an interview with Le Journal.

Plot Overview and Music

The storyline follows the romantic entanglements of Danny Zuko and Sandy Dombrowski, culminating in their tumultuous reunion at high school after a summer fling. The audience can expect to hear classic songs such as:

  • Summer Nights
  • Desperately Devoted to You
  • You’re the One That I Want
  • There Are Worse Things I Could Do

Although the dialogue will be performed in French, the iconic songs will remain in English, a choice Bégin supports. “It would be absurd to translate the songs; audiences want the originals,” he explained.

Choreography and Production Team

The choreography for this production will be reimagined by Team White, the winners of “Révolution,” ensuring a fresh take on the classic numbers.

Bégin’s Enthusiasm and Challenge

As the premiere approaches, Bégin expresses both excitement and recognition of the challenges ahead. “I have no desire to prove anything vocally, in dance, or as an actor. However, I’m eager to delve into this role and give my all,” he stated.

At 42 years old, Bégin is not concerned about portraying a teenager. “I’ve reviewed the film, and all actors appeared much older than their characters. On stage, anything is possible,” he remarked.

Ticket Availability

Tickets for the six performances of “Grease” are on sale starting today. Audiences can look forward to a captivating show that promises to bring the vibrant 1950s setting back to life.
