Royal Family Honors Queen Elizabeth II’s Centennial with Exhibition and Garden

The British royal family will commemorate what would have been Queen Elizabeth II’s 100th birthday with a series of tribute events. King Charles III and Queen Camilla will lead the celebrations beginning on April 20, shortly after the exhibition titled “Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style” opens at The King’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace.

Exhibition Highlights Queen Elizabeth II’s Fashion

The exhibition, organized by the Royal Collection Trust, features over 300 items from Queen Elizabeth II’s wardrobe spanning ten decades. Nearly half of these pieces will be exhibited publicly for the first time, marking it as the largest showcase of her fashion history.

Memorialization Efforts

On April 21, the royal family will further honor the late queen by reviewing proposed designs for the new Queen Elizabeth Memorial at the British Museum. U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and members of the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee will attend this session. They will inspect a scale model of the memorial and meet the artists contributing their works for the site.

Queen Elizabeth II Garden Opening

Additionally, Princess Anne will inaugurate the Queen Elizabeth II Garden in Regent’s Park. This garden aims to serve as a peaceful escape for the public and will open its doors on April 27.

Culmination of Events

The celebrations will culminate with a reception at Buckingham Palace on the evening of April 21. Various representatives from charities supported by Queen Elizabeth II will be present, including Cancer Research U.K. and the British Red Cross Society. The event will also feature guests who are centenarians, along with the serving of a special birthday cake.

Reflection and Celebration

King Charles III is anticipated to deliver a national address reflecting on the life and legacy of his mother. A royal source indicated that the tone of the address will be celebratory rather than somber. This will provide an opportunity for citizens across the four nations and the Commonwealth to unite in remembering the remarkable legacy of Queen Elizabeth II.
