Annandale Distillery Achieves World First with Low-Carbon Whisky Production

Annandale Distillery has achieved a milestone by becoming the first distillery globally to produce whisky using a low-carbon method. This innovative approach significantly lowers the carbon footprint associated with whisky production.

Decarbonisation Efforts at Annandale Distillery

As part of its environmental initiatives, Annandale Distillery is implementing a comprehensive decarbonisation plan. This plan includes:

  • Bottling and maturing whisky on-site to cut down on transportation.
  • Transitioning to electric vehicles wherever feasible.
  • Exploring options for reusing spent grains and carbon dioxide.

Professor Thomson highlighted the significance of this approach, noting, “We are definitely pioneering.” However, he also pointed out the challenge posed by high electricity costs in Europe, which are impacting overall production expenses. Despite affordable off-peak electricity, the green levy has made it expensive.

A Historic Revival

Annandale Distillery has a rich history, having first closed its doors in 1919. The distillery was revived following an extensive restoration project early this century. It officially reopened in 2015, with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting by the Princess Royal.

In 2024, the distillery commemorated a significant milestone by releasing its first 10-year-old single malt whisky since resuming operations. This event marks a key moment not only for the distillery but also for the whisky industry as it moves towards sustainable practices.
