Van der Poel Faces Double Mechanical Trouble, Walks Back in Arenberg Forest

Mathieu van der Poel faced significant mechanical issues during the Paris-Roubaix race, particularly in the challenging Trouée d’Arenberg. His day took a turn for the worse with two separate punctures, forcing him to navigate the cobbled terrain on foot at times.

Key Events during Paris-Roubaix

At 94 kilometers into the race, Van der Poel, representing Alpecin-Premier Tech, suffered his first puncture, leaving him stranded as his competitors, including Wout van Aert and World Champion Tadej Pogačar, sped ahead. In a bid to assist, teammate Jasper Philipsen offered his bike, but Van der Poel struggled to clip in.

Struggles at Arenberg

  • Van der Poel initially dismounted and returned Philipsen’s bike.
  • Tibor del Grosso, part of a following group, provided Van der Poel with a front wheel from his bike.
  • Despite this help, Van der Poel had to walk back against traffic to retrieve his bike.

With the new front wheel, he resumed racing but had lost crucial time, falling over two minutes behind the leaders.

Second Puncture and Recovery

Van der Poel’s misfortune continued as he encountered a second puncture with 91 kilometers remaining. This setback left him seemingly out of contention as he trailed significantly behind the frontrunners.

However, demonstrating resilience, he managed to get back on track, aligning with a smaller group featuring Filippo Ganna of Ineos Grenadiers. This regrouping was pivotal.

Closing the Gap

By the time they reached 55 kilometers to go, Van der Poel’s group had cut the deficit to just 25 seconds from the leading pack, which was still led by Pogačar and van Aert. This comeback showcased Van der Poel’s determination despite the mechanical challenges encountered during the iconic race.
