Akhtyamov Shines Amid Islanders’ Offensive Barrage

On Thursday, the Toronto Maple Leafs faced off against the New York Islanders at UBS Arena, ultimately losing 5-3. This match was significant for rookie goalie Artur Akhtyamov, who made his NHL debut. Despite allowing five goals on 44 shots, Akhtyamov maintained a positive attitude throughout his post-game media session.
Akhtyamov’s First NHL Start
The 24-year-old Russian described his first game as an unforgettable experience. “Every moment was my favourite,” he stated. Injuries to fellow goalies, Anthony Stolarz and Joseph Woll, led to Akhtyamov being called up to play against the Islanders.
He took the first-period barrage in stride, facing 24 shots before the first intermission. “I like being busy,” Akhtyamov commented. Though the team struggled defensively, players acknowledged his composure. “He looked calm,” remarked winger Steven Lorentz. “We didn’t give him much of a chance.”
Stats and Team Performance
- Akhtyamov: 5 goals allowed on 44 shots
- Save Percentage: .886
- Islanders: 5 power plays, 2 successful conversions
- Shots faced: 44
Throughout the season, Akhtyamov has been a promising prospect for the Maple Leafs. He boasts a save percentage of .903 in 36 appearances with the Toronto Marlies and participated in the AHL All-Star Game.
Facing Off Against a Childhood Idol
In his debut, Akhtyamov was eager to compete against Vezina Trophy contender Ilya Sorokin. Despite the loss, he finished with a better save percentage than Sorokin during their encounter. Akhtyamov said, “He was one of my favourite goalies when I was younger.” Sorokin struggled with only a .813 save percentage in this game.
Islanders’ Playoff Push
The victory propelled the Islanders closer to the third playoff spot in the Metropolitan Division. The team, motivated by their recent coaching change, dominated early, showcasing their desire to secure a playoff berth.
Referee Controversies
The game also featured some controversial calls that affected the Maple Leafs’ chances. Notably, Oliver Ekman-Larsson received a misconduct penalty after expressing frustration over a slashing call against Lorentz that led to a two-man disadvantage.
Head Coach Craig Berube criticized the officiating, stating, “I didn’t like the 5-on-3 call at all. I think it’s weak.” Lorentz added that he was confused about the penalty, asserting that he did not feel he deserved the call.
Emerging Talents
Aside from Akhtyamov, rookie Luke Haymes made a notable impact in his debut, securing an assist and displaying strong forechecking skills. “I think I played well because I just didn’t think a whole lot,” Haymes explained.
As the season progresses, both Akhtyamov and Haymes will be players to watch, representing a bright future for the Toronto Maple Leafs amidst their ongoing challenges.
