Crew Prepares Cygnus XL Cargo Mission for Saturday Launch

Northrop Grumman is set to launch its Cygnus XL cargo spacecraft on Saturday at 7:41 a.m. EDT. This mission aims to resupply the Expedition 74 crew aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Cygnus XL is loaded with over 11,000 pounds of various equipment, science experiments, and supplies for the crew.

Launch Details

The launch will take place atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The spacecraft is expected to be captured by the station’s Canadarm2 robotic arm on Monday. NASA flight engineers Chris Williams and Jack Hathaway have been preparing for this task through simulated training sessions.

Robotics Training

  • Engineers practiced using the robotics workstation to control the Canadarm2.
  • The simulation included various scenarios for capturing Cygnus XL during its approach.

Williams will operate the workstation during the capture, while Hathaway will oversee the spacecraft’s rendezvous with the ISS.

Cargo Operations

After Cygnus XL’s capture, mission controllers will remotely install it to the Unity module’s Earth-facing port. This cargo vessel will support a six-month mission at the ISS.

Scientific Research on Board

  • Quantum physics experiments to enhance the Cold Atom Lab.
  • A blood stem cell study focused on treating cancers and blood disorders.
  • Research aimed at preserving astronaut gut health.

Additional Station Activities

In a separate segment, Roscosmos station commander Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and flight engineer Sergei Mikaev conducted experiments to study how microgravity impacts the respiratory system. They used an acoustic sensor to record their exhalations.

Additionally, flight engineer Andrey Fedyaev is testing artificial intelligence tools for improving crew operations and communications aboard the ISS.
