Madeira Airport Operations Disrupted by Severe Weather Conditions

Madeira International Airport is experiencing significant disruptions due to severe weather conditions. The adverse weather has led to multiple flight cancellations and diversions.

Details of Airport Operations

On March 9, a limited number of aircraft managed to land at the airport. Two planes touched down in the early hours at 12:34 am and 2:02 am. However, after 2:02 am, no additional flights landed until 10:45 am. This halt caused two planes to be diverted to other airports.

Flight Cancellations

  • 20 flights scheduled for arrival today were cancelled.
  • Three departures occurred early in the morning.
  • 20 scheduled departures later in the day were also cancelled.

The airline operator, ANA, has advised travelers to stay updated on their flight status. They are encouraged to contact airlines before heading to the airport due to ongoing weather issues.

Weather Warnings Issued

The forecast predicts adverse weather conditions will likely continue affecting flight operations for the coming days. The Funchal harbour master’s office has issued warnings about rough seas and strong winds, which are expected to persist until 6 am on April 10.

Additionally, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued yellow and orange weather warnings, advising caution to both travelers and residents in the area.

As conditions evolve, passengers should remain vigilant and check updates frequently to avoid any unnecessary travel disruptions.
