Ryan Poles Outlines Bears’ Defensive Strategy

The Chicago Bears are gearing up for the 2026 NFL Draft, aiming to solidify their defensive line following significant player departures. The team has lost key members of the defense, including safeties Kevin Byard and Jaquan Brisker, cornerback Nahshon Wright, and linebacker Tremaine Edmunds.

Ryan Poles’ Vision for Bears’ Defensive Strategy

During the recent NFL owners’ meeting, General Manager Ryan Poles articulated the organization’s intentions to revamp the defense. He emphasized the urgency in finding players that align with the team’s defensive identity as they look to build on their success from the previous season.

Key Attributes: Speed and Aggression

Poles highlighted two critical characteristics for potential recruits: speed and violence. These attributes are essential for implementing the aggressive defensive style associated with Dennis Allen’s previous teams in New Orleans.

  • Speed: Aiming for a faster defense.
  • Violence: Seeking a more aggressive approach on the field.

“If you go back to teams that D.A. has had, specifically the defenses in New Orleans, there’s an aggressiveness, there’s a violence and there’s a speed that they play with,” Poles stated. “So we’re trying to match that.”

Draft Strategies and Considerations

Poles acknowledged the challenges with their current draft positioning, as their first-round pick is lower than in previous years. He noted that this makes it trickier to find a suitable edge rusher, which is critical for enhancing their defensive lineup.

Despite these challenges, there is a defined vision from both the Bears’ front office and coaching staff on how to mold the defense. With numerous roster changes underway, opportunities abound for new talent to emerge.

As the Bears prepare for the draft, their focus remains clear: prioritize players who can elevate their defense to new heights.
