Snow Accumulation Causes Rouyn-Noranda Arena Roof Collapse

On Sunday, April 5, 2026, the roof of the Évain arena in Rouyn-Noranda collapsed due to significant snow accumulation. This incident marks the second roof failure related to heavy snowfall in less than ten days. Local resident Karie Gaudreau lamented the loss of a community hub where many activities took place.
Details of the Collapse
The Sûreté du Québec received a call regarding the roof’s collapse around 7:30 AM. According to spokesperson Élizabeth Marquis, snowfall caused the emergency situation. The arena was not only a venue for ice sports but also hosted various community organizations and events.
Significance to the Community
- The arena has been a focal point for the village of Évain, offering a space for hockey training and community gatherings.
- Gaudreau recalled that her son learned to skate there in 2014.
- Jennifer Manseau, another resident, emphasized the building’s importance for local youth activities.
Fortunately, all individuals inside the building managed to evacuate safely, and no injuries were reported. Rouyn-Noranda Mayor Gilles Chapadeau confirmed that only the arena suffered damage, while the rest of the building remains intact. He assured residents that alternatives would be sought for the affected groups.
Investigations and Future Precautions
Teams of engineers and firefighters have been dispatched to investigate the causes of the collapse. Although Mayor Chapadeau did not speculate on findings, he noted the region’s exceptional snowfall this winter, totaling 335 cm—80 cm above the average annual figure. Municipal workers had been clearing the arena’s roof since April 2, a precautionary measure that raises concerns about structural integrity.
Additional Safety Measures
This collapse follows a similar incident on March 28, 2026, when the roof of the rink used by the Huskies, a junior hockey team, also fell. In light of these events, the city decided to close the Cadillac and Cloutier arenas for safety assessments. A comprehensive review of all municipal buildings is underway to prevent further incidents.
Communication director Anne-Marie Nadeau expressed the city’s concerns but refrained from further comment. The community remains hopeful for swift solutions to support local organizations affected by the recent collapses.
