Polestar’s Biggest EV to Be Manufactured Exclusively in the U.S.

Polestar, the Swedish electric vehicle manufacturer, is shifting its focus to U.S. production for its flagship model. The Polestar 3 electric SUV will soon be exclusively manufactured in Charleston, South Carolina. This transition marks a significant change for the company, as the Polestar 3 will be its only model made in the United States.

Exclusive U.S. Production of Polestar 3

Previously, the Polestar 3 was produced in Chengdu, China, as well as at Volvo’s plant in South Carolina. However, by the end of this year, all production will be consolidated in Charleston. This move is part of a broader strategy to improve manufacturing efficiencies and manage costs, particularly in light of high import tariffs on Chinese-made vehicles and parts.

Reasons for the Move

  • End of Chinese production for the Polestar 3.
  • Consolidation aims to drive efficiencies in manufacturing.
  • High import tariffs on Chinese vehicles impact profitability.

Polestar has not disclosed all the reasons behind this consolidation but has acknowledged the need for operational efficiency. The support from Volvo will help streamline the production process and reduce logistical challenges associated with having multiple manufacturing locations for a single model.

Financial Backing and Challenges

The company has received a significant financial boost from Volvo, which will convert approximately $274 million into additional shares. This additional funding comes in addition to the $300 million financing secured last year. While Polestar reported record retail sales of 60,119 vehicles last year—an increase of 34%—it also faced substantial operating losses totaling around $1 billion.

Future Models and Expansion

In addition to the Polestar 3, the company offers the Polestar 4, a smaller and more affordable SUV. As Polestar looks ahead, it plans to introduce several new models:

  • Polestar 5 four-door grand tourer by the end of this year.
  • A wagon version of the Polestar 4.
  • Second generation of the Polestar 2 sedan by 2028.
  • Polestar 7 compact SUV anticipated in 2028.

With these strategic moves, Polestar aims to strengthen its position in the competitive electric vehicle market, potentially paving the way for future successes.
