Quebec Unveils Interactive Map for Real-Time Gas Price Tracking

Motorists in Quebec can now utilize an innovative online tool designed to assist them in finding optimal gas prices. This interactive map, recently introduced by Quebec’s energy board, allows users to view real-time gasoline prices across the province.
New Gas Price Tracking Tool
The platform, launched on a Wednesday in late April 2025, enables users to easily search for service stations and compare prices for regular and premium gasoline, as well as diesel. This initiative is part of the newly implemented Act to ensure responsible governance of energy resources.
Key Features of the Interactive Map
- Users can zoom in on a map to view gas prices.
- Prices must be updated by retailers within five minutes of a change.
- Over 2,671 retailers are registered on the platform.
- Discrepancies between pump prices and map prices can be reported directly online.
Regulatory Framework
This initiative aims to improve transparency in Quebec’s gasoline market, enabling consumers to make informed decisions at the pump. Gas stations are required to post their prices, with penalties for non-compliance, ranging from $1,000 to $4,000 for first-time offenders.
Market Context
The introduction of this tool comes amid rising gasoline prices, particularly due to fluctuations linked to ongoing geopolitical events in the Middle East. The price of regular gas in the Montreal area hovered around $2 per liter, prompting frustration among drivers.
Former Economy Minister Pierre Fitzgibbon advocated for this legislative change based on findings from a 2024 study by Montreal economics professor Robert Clark. The study highlighted price disparities in regions such as Quebec City, Gaspésie, and Côte-Nord, suggesting that local market structures contributed to these inconsistencies.
CAA-Québec spokesperson Simon Bourassa noted that the map will aid consumers in identifying better prices before filling up, though current geopolitical tensions may limit immediate price reductions.
Future Outlook
As part of a broader strategy to address pricing issues, the Quebec government plans to remove the floor price for gasoline by June 2025. This move is expected to enhance competition and could lead to more favorable prices for consumers across the province.
