French President Rebukes Trump for Mocking His Marriage

French President Emmanuel Macron has responded to remarks made by former US President Donald Trump regarding his marriage. This incident occurred following Trump’s criticism of France’s reluctance to join the US-Israeli offensive against Iran.
Trump’s Controversial Comments
At a private event, Trump mocked Macron’s relationship with his wife, Brigitte. He stated, “I called up France, Macron, whose wife treats him extremely badly.” This comment referenced a video from 2025 where Brigitte appeared to shove Macron aboard an official jet.
Macron’s Response
During a visit to South Korea, Macron addressed Trump’s remarks, labeling them “not elegant” and below the expected standard. The French President, who is 25 years younger than his wife, has faced scrutiny regarding their relationship, leading to a defamation lawsuit against US podcaster Candace Owens last year.
Military Dynamics in the Region
While European allies generally supported US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities last year, the current military campaign lacks clear strategy and widespread backing. France has sent military resources to the Persian Gulf, including jets and air defense systems.
- Military deployments: French aircraft and naval assets are stationed in the region for protection.
- Support stance: France has refused to support the US naval efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
- Joint policy: France, alongside Spain and Italy, has denied US aircraft usage of its airbases for the bombing campaign.
Shifts in Leadership Relations
The relationship between Macron and Trump, once marked by camaraderie, has soured over international policy disagreements. This personal rivalry, which began with public displays of handshake competition, has evolved into a series of personal attacks.
Backlash in France
Trump’s comments have provoked a strong reaction in France, a nation that values privacy regarding public figures’ personal lives. French lawmaker Manuel Bompard condemned Trump’s remarks as “absolutely unacceptable,” while Yaël Braun-Pivet, head of the National Assembly, criticized the insensitivity of mocking serious international issues.
This clash highlights the growing divide between the two leaders, particularly as they attempt to navigate complex geopolitical landscapes while managing personal attacks that overshadow their diplomatic relations.
