North Belfast Project Breaks Barriers for 13 Years

A community initiative in North Belfast, known as the TASCIT project, has gained recognition for its work in dismantling both physical and mental barriers in interface communities. Operating for thirteen years, TASCIT (Twaddell Ardoyne Shankill Communities in Transition) actively involves residents in discussions surrounding community relations and the contentious removal of Peace Walls.

Impact of the North Belfast Project

Supported by the International Fund for Ireland’s Peace Barriers Programme, TASCIT focuses on fostering dialogue between communities that have historically faced strife. The project has facilitated significant changes, including the historic removal of the Flax Street barrier, which had separated communities for forty years. This development coincided with the establishment of the Hillview Retail Park, home to popular brands like Lidl and Starbucks.

Community Voices

  • Mary, a local resident, shared her initial apprehension about participating in TASCIT. After engaging with the program, she found commonalities between the communities on either side of the interface.
  • Mary emphasized how participants discussed their lives and aspirations, noting, “We are all dealing with the same issues.”

Sean Oliver, a TASCIT staff member, expressed pride in their role as a catalyst for discussion among local residents. He highlighted the importance of fostering respectful and honest conversations regarding the future of Peace Walls.

Official Endorsements

Deputy Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Paul Doherty, praised TASCIT’s approach to building trust. He noted that regular consultations and community events, including the ‘Challenging Conversations’ course, encouraged participation from individuals of both nationalist and unionist backgrounds.

Angila Chada, an IFI Board Member, identified the Peace Barriers Programme as transformative for interface communities. With over 23,000 residents taking part in events in just the last year, Chada emphasized the commitment to reducing division and creating opportunities for regeneration.

A Vision for the Future

By empowering communities to work collaboratively, TASCIT continues to play a critical role in advancing peace and reconciliation efforts in North Belfast. Their initiatives have not only addressed longstanding divisions but have also fostered a new sense of community where shared spaces are valued by all.
