Braves’ Chris Sale Overcomes Illness to Dominate Athletics

Atlanta Braves pitcher Chris Sale, recently overcoming an illness, delivered an impressive performance against the Oakland Athletics. In a game played on Wednesday, Sale limited the Athletics to just one baserunner over six innings, leading the Braves to a 5-1 victory.

Chris Sale’s Remarkable Comeback

Although Sale (2-0) faced velocity issues due to his illness, he adeptly worked with a limited pitch arsenal. Manager Walt Weiss disclosed after the game that Sale was feeling extremely unwell before the start. “He was sick as a dog,” Weiss noted, adding that he hoped Sale could last three or four innings. Instead, he managed to pitch six dominant innings.

A Stellar Performance

  • Sale allowed only one hit during the game.
  • His sole mistake was a fourth-inning homer by Shea Langeliers.
  • Besides that, he retired every hitter he faced.

Sale reflected on his focus during the game, stating, “You’re not going to have your best stuff every time. I knew I had to find a way to make it a game.” This performance comes a few days after his 37th birthday, showcasing his resilience and skill on the mound.

Historical Significance

Sale is a nine-time All-Star and won the National League Cy Young Award in 2024, his first season with the Braves. With three more strikeouts in this game, he climbed the career strikeout list, now ranking 30th and is just 19 strikeouts away from surpassing Hall of Famer Tom Glavine.

Braves’ Season Outlook

The Braves are eager to bounce back after an injury-plagued 2025 season, which marked the end of their seven consecutive playoff appearances. During spring training, they dealt with injuries to key players, including Spencer Schwellenbach, Hurston Waldrep, and Spencer Strider.

This season, however, the Braves have started strong with a 4-2 record after two home series. Sale emphasized that the team is not ready to celebrate too early, saying, “We’re one week in, but getting off on the right foot is huge. The energy in the clubhouse is fun.”

The Braves are now heading to Arizona for their first road trip of the season, looking to maintain their momentum.
