Two Nations Advance to AFCON 2027 Group Stage Qualifiers

Two nations have successfully advanced to the AFCON 2027 group stage qualifiers after their victories in the preliminary round. Lesotho and South Sudan secured their spots following decisive performances in their second-leg matches held recently.
Lesotho’s Triumph
Lesotho defeated Seychelles 2-1 in their second leg after a goalless draw in the first leg. Seychelles initially took the lead with a goal from Brandon Labrosse. However, Lesotho turned the match around with goals from Lebohang Lesako and a late winner by Motebang Sera.
South Sudan Qualifies Despite Setback
South Sudan also advanced despite facing a shocking 1-0 defeat at home to Djibouti. Their earlier 4-0 victory in the first leg allowed them to progress with an aggregate score of 4-1.
Upcoming Second-Leg Matches
Four additional second-leg fixtures are scheduled for Tuesday:
- Eritrea will defend a 2-0 lead against Eswatini.
- Hosts Mauritius and Somalia are tied after their first leg ended in a draw.
- Burundi will face Chad, holding a comfortable 4-0 lead from the first match.
- Ethiopia will clash with Sao Tome and Principe after winning 3-0 in their first encounter in El Jadida, Morocco.
What Lies Ahead
The victorious teams from the preliminary round will join other top-ranked nations in the AFCON 2027 group stage qualifiers. This tournament will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, which have secured automatic qualification as hosts.
