DR Congo Fan Misses World Cup Play-Off in Mexico Over Visa Issues

The fan known as Lumumba Vea, whose real name is Michel Kuka Mboladinga, has made headlines due to visa issues preventing his attendance at the World Cup play-off in Mexico. This match is crucial as the DR Congo national team faces Jamaica in Guadalajara.
Visa Issues Prevent DR Congo Fan from Attending World Cup Play-Off
Lumumba Vea gained popularity during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations for his striking suits and unique ability to maintain a statuesque pose throughout matches. His iconic gestures pay homage to Patrice Lumumba, a former prime minister of DR Congo.
Visa Application Struggles
As the match day approached, Vea shared on social media that he could not secure a visa for Mexico. He made a final attempt to obtain an emergency visa by traveling to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Unfortunately, he faced significant delays.
- Visa processing requires at least one day, which was not feasible given his tight schedule.
- He was informed that including bank statements in his application was mandatory.
- Due to not having the necessary paperwork, he could not fly to Mexico as planned.
As a result, Kuka Mboladinga returned to Kinshasa, DR Congo’s capital. Despite his absence, he expressed unwavering support for the national team.
DR Congo’s Journey to the Play-Offs
The DR Congo team earned their place in the inter-confederation play-offs by defeating Nigeria in the second round of African qualifying. This match holds particular importance as DR Congo aims for their second World Cup appearance, their first being in 1974 when they competed as Zaire.
In that tournament, they suffered losses to Scotland, Yugoslavia, and Brazil, failing to progress past the group stage. Now, they face a pivotal challenge as they seek to return to the world stage.
