Kia Unveils Affordable EV with Ambitious Goals

Kia has officially launched orders for its new electric vehicle, the EV2, across Europe. This model is now available to customers in countries like Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, and Ireland, with deliveries beginning next month. Kia has priced the EV2 lower than anticipated, starting at €26,600 ($30,500) in Germany.
Kia EV2: Key Features and Variations
The EV2 is offered in four different variations: Light, Air, Earth, and GT-Line. The base model, the Light, features a 42.2 kWh battery paired with a 108 kW (146 hp) front-mounted electric motor. This setup allows for a range of up to 317 km (197 miles).
- Battery Options: Customers can choose between two battery packs: 42.2 kWh and 61 kWh.
- Extended Range: The 61 kWh battery offers an impressive range of up to 453 km (281 miles).
- Performance: The EV2 GT-Line starts at €36,890 ($42,600) and includes a more powerful 99.5 kW (135 hp) motor.
Charging and Technology
The EV2 utilizes a 400V architecture to keep costs in check, enabling charging from 10% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes with a 118 kW DC fast charger. In comparison, the EV6, which uses an 800V system, can achieve this in about 18 minutes.
Inside, the vehicle features Kia’s latest ccNC infotainment system, which includes dual 12.3-inch screens. A “Lite” version is standard, which omits built-in navigation but allows smartphone connectivity for apps like Google Maps.
Design and Space
The EV2 measures slightly over 4,000 mm (160 inches) in length, making it smaller than the Volkswagen ID.3. Despite its compact size, the EV2 boasts generous rear passenger legroom and a cargo capacity of up to 403 liters.
Kia’s Electrification Goals in Europe
Soohang Chang, President and CEO at Kia Europe, emphasized the significant role of the EV2 in the company’s electrification strategy. The production of the EV2 at the Kia facility in Slovakia underlines the company’s commitment to expanding its electric vehicle offerings.
With the launch of the EV2, Kia aims to enhance its competitiveness in the European market. The model is expected to challenge prominent EV competitors such as BYD and MG, as well as future entrants like the Volkswagen ID. Polo.
As Kia continues to expand its electric vehicle lineup, it looks to build on the momentum generated from previous sales success in Europe. However, U.S. customers may not have access to the EV2 or other Kia electric models due to recent policy changes affecting future releases.
