Fast Food Chain Revitalizes Closed Restaurant with New Project

A Pizza Hut in Shaw Ridge closed its doors unexpectedly in January 2025 and has since remained vacant. In February 2026, McDonald’s received approval from Swindon Borough Council for an ambitious project to revitalize the site.
New Project Details
The approved plans involve partially demolishing the existing building. The remainder will be transformed into a hot food takeaway and drive-thru service.
- Conversion work has begun, marked by fenced-off areas and construction equipment.
- Large heaps of rubble and debris have been placed near a skip on the site.
- Small shipping containers and portaloos are stationed nearby.
- A solar panel has been observed leaning against a stand on-site.
Changes to the Building Structure
As part of the renovation, the main structure will undergo significant alterations. All internal walls will be removed, and the overall height of the building will be reduced. The iconic “hut” roof design will be replaced with a lower, flat roof.
Notably, the new layout will not include any seating area or divisions between the customer area and kitchen. The conversion specifically categorizes the establishment as a “takeaway,” indicating it will primarily serve takeaway and drive-thru customers, along with possible delivery services.
Impact on Local Traffic and Community Concerns
As the renovation progresses, local businesses have expressed concern about increased traffic congestion. The approval permits the reduction of parking spaces from 45 to 29, a move that could lead to long queues blocking access to the leisure park. This has prompted worries about delays for other customers in the area.
- Over three dozen residents submitted oppositional remarks to the local planners regarding McDonald’s proposal.
- Concerns highlight potential traffic issues on Whitehill Way.
With construction now underway, the future of this site marks a significant shift in the Shaw Ridge area’s food service landscape. The revitalization of the former Pizza Hut into a McDonald’s takeaway aims to cater to growing demand while potentially reshaping local traffic dynamics.
