U16 Trappers’ Bigelow Thrilled for OHL Cup Journey

This season, the U16 Trappers of North Bay have earned a significant opportunity. Four of their standout players, including Trey Bigelow, have been selected to represent Team NOHA in the prestigious OHL Cup. This tournament, a vital showcase event leading to the Ontario Hockey League Draft, runs from March 30 to April 4 in Toronto.

The selected Trappers include:

  • Reed Sauve
  • Aidan Duchesne
  • Seth Verbiwski
  • Trey Bigelow

Bigelow, hailing from New Liskeard, has had a strong performance this season, recording 11 goals and 14 assists for a total of 25 points in 36 games. His team, however, missed out on the Great North U18 AAA Playoffs, making this opportunity even more significant.

Bigelow’s Playing Style and Influence

At 6 feet tall and weighing over 160 pounds, Bigelow is well-equipped to face older competition in the Great North U18 League. He describes himself as a “big-bodied, strong playmaking forward” with excellent hockey sense and vision on the ice. He aims to leverage his physicality to create advantages for his team.

In addition to his playing style, Bigelow looks up to players like Camryn Warren of the North Bay Battalion and Connor McDavid of the NHL, citing their skills and hockey IQ as inspirations.

OHL Draft Transition

The upcoming OHL Draft will see a significant change this year. For the first time since 2000, the draft will occur in mid-June, specifically on June 12 and 13 in Kingston, following the online drafts traditionally held in April.

Bigelow acknowledges the pressures of performing in front of scouts but remains focused on his game. “I just keep playing my game, setting up plays, and using my body to help my team offensively,” he explained.

Gratitude to Coaches

Bigelow has expressed appreciation for the coaching staff that has supported him throughout his journey. He specifically thanked coaches from Temiskaming Shores Minor Hockey and his current coaches, Simon, Al, and Jeff Mancini, for their belief in his abilities.

The U16 Trappers’ participation in the OHL Cup highlights their growth and potential on the ice, marking an exciting phase in their young careers.
