Wolff Details Russell’s Challenges at Japanese Grand Prix

Toto Wolff has acknowledged that George Russell will encounter challenges at the upcoming Japanese Grand Prix. The Mercedes team principal pointed out that Russell’s difficulties during Qualifying will carry over into the race.
Qualifying Highlights from the Suzuka Circuit
During the Qualifying session at Suzuka, Kimi Antonelli secured pole position. This victory marks his second consecutive P1 slot, following his first pole in China. Meanwhile, Russell finished the session in second place, nearly three-tenths of a second behind Antonelli.
Technical Adjustments Affecting Performance
Russell attributed his struggles to a “small adjustment” made to the rear suspension of his car. He stated that this modification negatively impacted the vehicle’s performance. Wolff confirmed that the adjustment was intended to have minimal effect, yet it resulted in excessive oversteer, hindering Russell’s ability to compete.
Wolff’s Assessment of the Situation
When questioned about whether the set-up change was aimed at conserving tyre performance for the race, Wolff clarified that the situation was quite the opposite. He emphasized that Russell must carry this disadvantage into race day. “These things happen,” Wolff noted, indicating the unpredictability of racing.
Antonelli’s Calm Under Pressure
In contrast, Wolff praised Antonelli’s composure during Qualifying. The 19-year-old driver maintained a calm demeanor and effectively executed a solid lap. Wolff highlighted Antonelli’s ability to handle pressure, as demonstrated by his team radio communication.
- Qualifying Position: George Russell – 2nd, Kimi Antonelli – 1st
- Time Gap: Nearly three-tenths between Russell and Antonelli
- Wolff’s Comments: Russell’s oversteer issues were compounded by set-up changes
Wolff expressed satisfaction in seeing Antonelli’s growth as a driver, noting the effectiveness of his approach during the session. As the race approaches, the team’s adjustments and strategies will be critical in navigating the challenges presented by the Suzuka Circuit.
