Brazil Unveils First Locally Produced Gripen E Fighter Jet

Brazil has recently made a significant advancement in its defense capabilities with the unveiling of the Gripen E fighter jet, the first of its kind to be produced locally. This historic event took place on March 25 at Embraer’s industrial complex in Gavião Peixoto, São Paulo. The rollout aligns Brazil with a select group of nations that possess the technology to manufacture advanced fighter aircraft.

The Gripen E Fighter Jet

The Gripen E jet exemplifies Brazil’s ambition to enhance its air defense capabilities. It is designed for multi-mission roles, including:

  • Reconnaissance
  • Strike missions

This advanced aircraft features state-of-the-art avionics, sensors, and mission systems. Its network-centric architecture supports better situational awareness, enabling coordinated tactical decisions.

Production Details

Embraer’s facility in Gavião Peixoto will produce 36 Gripen fighters under a contract signed in 2014. This includes:

  • 28 single-seat Gripen E variants
  • 8 two-seat Gripen F variants

To date, 11 aircraft have been delivered to the Brazilian Air Force. Another 14 units are set to follow the same production model, utilizing both local and international supply chains.

Operational Readiness

The Gripen E has been actively participating in Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) missions from Anápolis Air Force Base since February. These operations safeguard Brazilian airspace over key federal areas.
