Alberta Faces Wintry Storm, Potential for 25 cm Snowfall

Alberta is bracing for a significant winter storm, predicted to bring harsh weather conditions across various regions. Affected areas include both northern and western parts of the province, which will experience heavy snow and extremely low temperatures.
Details of the Incoming Wintry Storm
The storm is set to begin on Tuesday, with snowfall warnings issued by Environment Canada. These warnings cover a broad area, stretching from Slave Lake and Grande Prairie to Hinton and Edson. Notable mountain communities, such as Jasper, Lake Louise, and Banff, will also be impacted.
Snowfall Expectations
- Snowfall accumulation: 15 to 25 centimeters
- Duration: Storm to last approximately two days
- Peak intensity of snow: Expected Tuesday evening
- Clearing: Anticipated by Wednesday morning
Travel conditions are likely to be hazardous. Residents are urged to prepare for poor visibility and drifting snow. It’s recommended that drivers check road conditions and allocate extra time for their journeys.
Extreme Cold Conditions
In addition to the snow, Alberta’s northeastern regions will experience severe cold temperatures. Fort Chipewyan and surrounding areas are expected to record wind chill values reaching as low as -40°C.
Cold Weather Forecast
- Afternoon highs: Approximately -20°C
- Overnight lows: Expected to drop to -31°C
Environment Canada warns that such extreme cold poses serious health risks. Frostbite can occur within minutes on exposed skin, especially under severe wind chill conditions. Residents in these regions should be vigilant for signs of exposure, including:

- Chest pain
- Muscle weakness
- Numbness or color change in fingers and toes
The bitter cold is projected to moderate by Friday, providing some relief to the affected areas.
