Community Shield Relocates as Wembley Hosts Concert

The 2026 Community Shield is set to take place at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium. This marks a significant return, as it has been 20 years since the match was last held there. The shift in venue arises from scheduling conflicts with The Weeknd’s concert series at Wembley Stadium.
Community Shield Relocates to Cardiff
The Football Association (FA) confirmed that Wembley will be unavailable on the 15th and 16th of August due to “pre-planned concerts.” The Weeknd is scheduled to perform five concerts from August 14 to 19 at the iconic venue, leading to the decision to host the Community Shield elsewhere.
Principality Stadium’s Historic Role
The Community Shield will return to the Principality Stadium, which hosted the event six times between 2001 and 2006. This relocation generates excitement among local officials and fans alike.
- Gavin Marshall, Chief Financial and Operating Officer of the Welsh Rugby Union, expressed pride in hosting the match after two decades.
- He emphasized the stadium’s capacity to deliver exceptional experiences, guaranteeing a memorable atmosphere for supporters.
Historical Context
During its previous stint in Cardiff, prominent teams such as Liverpool and Arsenal each won two titles. Additionally, Manchester United and Chelsea each secured the trophy in 2003 and 2005, respectively.
Notably, the Principality Stadium has a seating capacity of 74,500 and is also poised to host the opening match of Euro 2028, a tournament jointly held by England, the Republic of Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.
