Qualcomm Balances Costs and Performance Amid Rising Chip Prices

Efforts to Mitigate Chip Price Surge

At a press conference on May 20, Chris Patrick, Senior Vice President of Qualcomm, acknowledged the challenges faced by customers due to escalating semiconductor prices. He stated, “We recognize our customers’ concerns and are exploring solutions,” emphasizing the company’s commitment to finding a balance between performance and cost.

Innovative Approaches to Chip Design

Qualcomm is considering various approaches to adapt to the current market conditions. One potential strategy includes cross-mounting product lines with modified specifications, rather than solely relying on high-end chips. This approach is intended to maintain competitive pricing while not compromising performance.

Impact on Samsung’s Exynos Chip Lineup

  • Analysts predict that Samsung’s in-house Exynos 2700 could represent up to 50% of the Galaxy S27 lineup by 2027.
  • The Exynos share for the Galaxy S26, launched this year, is approximately 25%.

Contrary to these projections, Kim Sang-pyo, President of Qualcomm Korea, suggested that discussions regarding reduced Snapdragon adoption have not taken place, aiming to reassure partners about their ongoing collaboration.

Collaboration with Samsung

A significant theme of Qualcomm’s briefing was its ongoing partnership with Samsung. Patrick highlighted the importance of close collaboration, stating, “The era of designing phones and chips separately is over.” This approach signals a shift towards integrated development between Qualcomm and its partners.

Strengthening Presence in Korea

Qualcomm is keen on consolidating its position in the Korean market. Don McGuire, Senior Vice President of Qualcomm, reported that Snapdragon brand awareness in Korea stands at 68%, which ranks third globally. Additionally, 61% of consumers associate Snapdragon with premium experiences. This strong perception aims to reinforce Qualcomm’s leadership in technology innovation.

In response to rising chip prices, Qualcomm is strategically adapting its product offerings. By focusing on collaboration and optimizing their approach, the company aims to meet customer needs while navigating the complexities of the current semiconductor landscape.
