Medical Center COO John Manning Announces Year-End Retirement

John F. Manning Jr., PhD, MBA, the Chief Operating Officer and Corporate Chief of Staff at Vanderbilt Health, has announced his retirement, effective December 31. With over 25 years of service at Vanderbilt, Manning has significantly shaped the organization’s operations and growth.

A Journey of Success
Manning’s journey began in Boston. He earned his PhD in civil engineering from the University of Notre Dame and an MBA from the University of Chicago. Early in his career, he worked at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, followed by Argonne National Laboratories. He joined Vanderbilt Health in 2000, initially as the executive director of Research Operations.
Under Manning’s leadership, the School of Medicine saw a remarkable increase in research funding—growing from $200 million to over $400 million annually by 2008. He ascended through various roles, culminating as Chief Operating Officer and Corporate Chief of Staff following Vanderbilt Health’s separation from Vanderbilt University.
Major Projects and Innovations
Manning’s leadership facilitated numerous significant expansions, such as:
- Main Campus Plaza reconstruction
- Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital expansion
- Construction of the Belle Meade Surgery Center
- Recent addition of the Jim Ayers Tower at Vanderbilt University Hospital
Additionally, he played a vital role in selecting and implementing Epic, a new electronic health record system, enhancing both administrative and clinical functions within the organization.
