New Childcare Support Saves Defence Families Up to £6000 Annually

A new Defence initiative is set to significantly enhance support for military families with young children. Starting in September 2026, this scheme will roll out across Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, potentially saving families up to £6,000 annually for childcare costs.

Transformative Childcare Support for Forces Families

Announced by Defence Secretary John Healey MP, this program aims to equalize the childcare support provided to UK Armed Forces families with that available in England. It will be managed through the existing Early Years childcare reimbursement scheme, ensuring eligible families receive substantial assistance.

Key Details of the Scheme

  • Launch Date: September 2026
  • Potential Savings: Up to £6,000 annually per child
  • Eligibility: Working Armed Forces families with children aged 9 months to 3 years in Scotland and Wales, and up to 4 years in Northern Ireland.

This initiative addresses the rising cost of living for service families stationed in the UK and overseas. The scheme acknowledges the unique challenges these families face, including frequent relocations and the demands placed on their service members.

John Healey emphasized the importance of military families to national security. With increasing demands on the Armed Forces, the government is committed to supporting service personnel and their families effectively. This childcare support is part of a broader strategy aimed at tackling recruitment and retention challenges within the military.

Additional Government Support

The new childcare scheme is part of extensive reforms the Ministry of Defence has initiated since July 2024. Other key initiatives include:

  • A new housing strategy to improve living conditions for service members.
  • The largest pay increase in two decades for Armed Forces personnel.
  • Implementation of the Armed Forces Covenant into law.

Feedback from military families highlighted the need for improved childcare support, prompting the government to take action. As the scheme prepares to launch, eligible families will have ample time to explore suitable childcare options.

The MOD continues to collaborate with devolved governments to ensure comprehensive support for all forces families, regardless of their location. Detailed information regarding eligibility and specifics of the scheme will be provided in the upcoming months.
