Hutson Joins Capitals Practice, Eyes NHL Debut on Wednesday
Cole Hutson has joined the Washington Capitals’ practice, creating excitement around his potential NHL debut. Coach Carbery has noted the growing anticipation from teammates regarding Hutson’s skill set and achievements.
Hutson’s Background and Preparation
Hutson spent his day off with forward Ryan Leonard, whom he played alongside during the United States’ gold medal win at the 2025 IIHF World Championship. Leonard had a similar trajectory, joining the Capitals directly after his sophomore season at Boston College. He encouraged Hutson to enjoy the game, emphasizing his capabilities at various levels.
Having the support of his older brothers adds to Hutson’s confidence. Lane Hutson, defenseman for the Montreal Canadiens, and Quinn Hutson, a forward prospect with the Edmonton Oilers, have both influenced Cole’s journey. Cole spoke with Lane for three hours, gaining insights from his NHL experiences. Lane, who turned pro after his sophomore season at Boston University, won the Calder Trophy last season after recording 66 points.
Meeting the Team
After arriving, Hutson met team captain Alex Ovechkin, who has set an NHL record with 921 career goals. Hutson expressed his admiration for Ovechkin, describing the experience as “awesome” and being “starstruck” by his abilities.
On-Ice Performance
During practice, Hutson demonstrated his offensive talent. In a small-ice drill, he executed a no-look pass that impressed teammates, leading to a goal by Ivan Miroshnichenko.
- Coach Carbery recognized Hutson’s contributions during practice.
- Center Pierre-Luc Dubois noted Hutson’s talent and ability to adapt quickly.
The Capitals are hopeful that Hutson’s inclusion in the lineup will provide a much-needed spark to the team. His dynamic skills and determination have raised the expectations for his potential participation in upcoming games.
