Gas Price Hike Hurts, Say Drivers

Recent gas price hikes have left drivers across Quebec feeling the pinch. As of Monday, regular gasoline was selling at 176.9 cents per liter at Shell stations in Montreal. Many motorists are now limiting their purchases to smaller amounts to mitigate financial impacts.
Gas Prices Impact Drivers
Thaissa Bellevue, a 19-year-old student, has just bought her first car. This week, she made her second ever refueling. Bellevue shared her concerns about rising gas prices, stating, “If the price of gas increases, it will be tough for me in the future.” She spent $30 on her tank but anticipates needing to refuel again within a week.
Another commuter, Candido de Barros, noted the challenges posed by inflated prices. Living in Blainville and working in Montreal, he filled his tank with $25, approximately 14 liters. “This is the first time I fill up at this price,” he remarked, adding he plans to refuel later where prices tend to drop in the evening.
Concerns Over Price Increases
Ernst Bléus, an 87-year-old resident, expressed confusion over the rapid price rise. “Why did it go from $1.41 last week to this?” he asked, criticizing both the government and the oil companies. He believes they exploit situations like conflicts in the Middle East to increase prices unjustly.
According to data from the Régie de l’énergie, the average price per liter for regular gasoline in Quebec has surged over 20 cents in less than a week. This increase significantly affects the cost of living, impacting everything from fuel to food prices.
- Gas Price on Monday: 176.9 cents per liter
- Student Fuel Experience: Thaissa Bellevue, $30 for two fill-ups
- Candido de Barros: $25 for 14 liters

Overall, the soaring gas prices are forcing drivers to reconsider their fueling habits. With prices soaring, many are adjusting their budgets to cope with the financial strain.
