Former Braves Catcher Ross Seeks Atlanta Manager Position

David Ross, the former catcher for the Atlanta Braves and recent manager for the Chicago Cubs, has expressed his desire to return to the dugout. He views the opportunity to manage the Braves as “amazing.” Ross made these comments in an interview with The Associated Press, where he discussed his interest in the position that will soon be vacated by Brian Snitker.

Brian Snitker’s Departure and Potential Candidates

Snitker, 69, announced his exit from the Braves following a decade-long tenure. Under his leadership, the team achieved significant milestones, including a 2021 World Series title. He finished his career with 811 wins, six NL East titles, and a wild-card berth.

Despite his success, the Braves concluded the 2023 season with a disappointing 76-87 record. Snitker’s contract is now over, paving the way for a new managerial appointment. The Braves’ general manager, Alex Anthopoulos, has yet to list any specific candidates for the position.

David Ross’s Managerial Background

  • Managerial Record: 262 wins, 284 losses (2020-2023) with the Chicago Cubs.
  • Notable Achievement: Led the Cubs to an NL Central title in 2020.
  • Playing Career: Ross played for the Braves from 2009 to 2012 and began with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2002.
  • Batting Average: Career .229 hitter, with a .273 average in 2009 and .289 in 2010.

Ross also highlighted his connections to Atlanta, recalling his time as a respected leader within the Braves’ clubhouse. “I loved my time there,” he noted.

Speculation Around Potential Candidates

As speculation mounts regarding who will replace Snitker, other notable candidates have emerged:

  • Walt Weiss – Former manager of the Colorado Rockies and current Braves bench coach.
  • Fredi González – Former manager for the Braves and Miami Marlins; currently the Braves’ third-base coach.
  • Mark DeRosa – Former infielder for the Braves.
  • Ryan Flaherty – Current Cubs bench coach.
  • Skip Schumaker – Former manager of the Miami Marlins.

As Ross awaits the outcome of the managerial search, he remains hopeful. “Hopefully, my name pops up, but we will wait and see on that,” he remarked. The Braves will need to carefully consider their options as they look for a new leader to guide the team into the 2024 season.
