Dolphins Release Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa

The Miami Dolphins are set to officially part ways with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, marking the end of his tenure with the team. The announcement was made on Monday, stating he will be released following the start of the new league year.
Dolphins Release Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa
Miami Dolphins general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan expressed gratitude for Tagovailoa’s contributions on and off the field during his six seasons with the team. A post-June 1 designation will be used for his release. This means Tagovailoa’s record dead-cap hit of $99 million will be spread over two years, with $67 million counted against this season’s cap.
Tagovailoa’s Career with Miami
Drafted fifth overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, Tua Tagovailoa has served as the Dolphins’ starting quarterback. During his tenure, he led the team to a 44-32 record and participated in one playoff game, which ended in a loss during the 2023 wild-card round.
Injuries have plagued Tagovailoa throughout his career, with only one season in which he played a complete 17-game slate. His recent performance raised concerns, as he recorded a career-high 15 interceptions, was sacked 30 times, and fumbled on eight occasions.
The Current Quarterback Situation
With Tagovailoa’s departure, the Dolphins currently have two quarterbacks on their roster: Quinn Ewers and Cam Miller. Both players are preparing for their second seasons with the team.
Upcoming Changes for the Dolphins
The legal tampering period for free agents begins at noon ET on Monday, with the new league year commencing at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday. Sullivan emphasized the team’s focus on enhancing competition and building a stronger foundation for future success.
