Maltese Nationals Evacuated from UAE Safely Arrive in Malta

On Saturday morning, Maltese nationals evacuated from the United Arab Emirates arrived safely in Malta. This operation followed an outbreak of conflict in Iran that prompted the need for evacuation.
Details of the Evacuation
Foreign Minister Ian Borg confirmed that 187 Maltese citizens boarded a chartered Airbus A330 flight organized by the Maltese government. The government assumed full responsibility for the travel costs.
The urgency for this evacuation stemmed from Iranian missile and drone attacks targeting the UAE and other Gulf states. As a consequence, the airspace over the Gulf region was closed, resulting in the cancellation of thousands of flights.
Efforts by Diplomatic Staff
In the days leading up to the evacuation, diplomatic personnel from the Maltese embassy in the UAE collaborated closely with the Foreign Ministry. They worked diligently to arrange transportation for Maltese citizens wishing to leave the UAE.
As soon as an opportunity arose for a flight, the evacuees were promptly transported back to their homeland. Maria Camilleri Calleja, Malta’s Ambassador to the UAE, confirmed the successful arrival of all nationals who expressed their desire to leave the region.
- The Facebook post by the Ambassador highlighted the importance of effective communication through emergency lines.
- She expressed gratitude to the UAE leadership and Maktoum airport staff for their support in facilitating the flight.
- She also acknowledged the EU Delegation in the UAE and its ambassadors for their cooperation during this time of crisis.
Ongoing Support for Maltese Nationals
Ambassador Camilleri Calleja assured that the Maltese embassy in the UAE remains operational. They are committed to providing additional assistance to any citizens still in the region.
This successful evacuation reflects the strong commitment of the Maltese government to ensure the safety of its citizens abroad in times of crisis.
