Varvara Voronchikhina Secures Russia’s First Medal at 2026 Winter Paralympics

Varvara Voronchikhina has made history by securing Russia’s first medal at the 2026 Winter Paralympics. This achievement follows a ban on Russian athletes that began in 2022 due to the country’s geopolitical actions. It marks a significant moment, as Russian athletes had not been able to compete under their national flag since the Sochi 2014 Paralympics.
Performance and Medals
At the Games in Cortina, Voronchikhina, aged 23, finished just 2.47 seconds behind gold medalist Ebba Aarsjoe from Sweden in the women’s standing downhill event. France’s Aurelie Richard took home the silver medal in the same competition. Additionally, Voronchikhina’s teammate, Aleksei Bugaev, claimed bronze in the men’s standing downhill event.
Reflecting on a Long Absence
Voronchikhina expressed her joy at the return of the Russian flag at the Games, saying, “It’s a really long time when we were without the flag, and I’m really glad.” Her statement reflects the sentiments of her country and teammates as they celebrate this momentous occasion.
Background on Russian Athletes
The ban on Russian athletes stemmed from a state-sponsored doping scandal and continued due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. While Russian competitors returned to the arena as neutrals, Voronchikhina is competing in her first Paralympics. Previously, she was unable to participate in the Beijing Games.
A Record of Success
- Two-time world champion in Para-alpine skiing.
- Secured four medals at her first World Cup in Saalbach, Austria.
- Won double slalom gold in Feldberg, Germany, earlier this year.
Voronchikhina is set to compete in five additional disciplines during the ongoing Paralympics. With her successful return to competitive skiing, she aims to further enhance her record and showcase her talent on an international stage.
