From Donation to Recovery: How Your Blood Saves Lives

Donating blood is a simple yet profound way to assist those in need. Once collected, blood enters a meticulously organized system before reaching patients who require it. This essential process initiates with dedicated donors like Jean Franckowiak, who has contributed to this life-saving cause for nearly 50 years.
From Collection to Transportation
After blood is donated and properly labeled, it is picked up by volunteer drivers. One such volunteer, Brittany Barrens Markren, plays a crucial role in this network. She collects blood products and supplies from various donor sites to ensure they reach their intended destinations.
Once the blood is transported to testing facilities, it undergoes thorough examinations. After testing, Barrens Markren returns to Memorial Blood Centers to find out where to deliver the safe units.
Arrival at the Hospital
The blood donations arrive promptly at hospitals like Aspirus St. Luke’s. Upon arrival, the Laboratory Administrative Director, Jennifer Alaspa, and her team conduct essential safety checks. They confirm that the blood has arrived at the correct temperature and meets safety standards.
- The first step involves scanning each blood unit into the hospital’s inventory.
- After logging, the blood is stored in designated refrigerators.
Constant Demand for Blood
The need for blood is continuous. According to Alaspa, hospitals can utilize between 10 to 40 units of blood daily. These units support various medical needs, including treatments in birthing centers and emergency departments.
As Alaspa emphasizes, one can never predict when they might require a blood transfusion. This uncertainty drives home the importance of regular donations.
The Heart of Giving
For long-time donor Jean Franckowiak, knowing the impact of her donations is fulfilling. She expresses that the act of giving feels rewarding and heartwarming. “I do whatever I can,” Franckowiak states, showcasing her commitment to this vital service.
The community continues to rally around the need for donations. El-Balad will host a blood drive with Memorial Blood Centers on March 9 and 10 at Pier B Resort. To participate, please register online.
